The U.S. Men’s National Team World Cup roster was announced yesterday. There were no big surprises, save for Robbie Findley getting the last forward spot over longtime Bob Bradley favorite Brian Ching — which, honestly, might say more about the state of Ching’s hamstrings than anything else.
The biggest surprise for the USA might have been how porous the defense looked in its 4-2 loss to the Czech Republic in Hartford on Tuesday night. All the American fullbacks were dreadful, and two key center-backs — Oguchi Onyewu and Clarence Goodson — made critical errors that led to goals. Yes, Tim Howard, Carlos Bocanegra and Jonathan Spector didn’t play, but even without them, this team is too talented in midfield and (save for Clint Dempsey) too raw at forward to look so soft at the back.
Don’t tell that to Noel Gallagher, though. In a video interview with England’s favorite milquetoast Tim Lovejoy, the Oasis frontman and long-time Manchester City supporter revealed that he doesn’t think England will beat the USA on June 12. He all but says England will take 7 points from the group and get through, but still, it would seem he thinks far more highly of this USA squad than… well, pretty much any soccer fan in the USA right about now.
I also think he, like those fans of the USA (and England), underestimates Slovenia at his peril. That said, if Gallagher’s prediction turns out better than Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, I’ll be just fine with that.
