Now do us all a favor and try to care a little more about the Champions League than the rest of MLS. Please.

The official attendance for the US Open Cup Final was 17,329, just a shade over the 16,382 that came out for the Portland v. Seattle third-round match. If that number is true, that’s not too bad, and D.C. United should get a little credit for marketing this game successfully. During the game, though, I thought Fox Soccer Channel was working pretty hard to obscure the actual number of empty seats in RFK Stadium. Keeping the cameras on the flag-heavy Barra Brava helped a little.

Sounders fans had a fairly decent showing, too, even though this group seems smaller than the one I was expecting to be there:

Must be the economy.

Favorite tweet came from my buddy Jeff:

This just in – the Washington production of “Stomp” will now star Josh Wicks.

It’s a 2,700 mile trip one way; I’d say that’s not a bad group for a US Open Cup final.

And if many were locals or only traveled a few hundred miles, that’s pretty impressive to see a first year MLS side with that many fans on the opposite coast.

Agreed, but these are Sounders fans we’re talking about here. Maybe their home crowds just had me thinking more of them would be crazy enough to drop the $700 or so necessary to make this trip.

I’d say it would be an even larger traveling group if they made the MLS Cup Final, but that’s actually in Seattle this year, isn’t it?

Also, DC is a city full of transplants. A lot of people probably moved there from Seattle and environs.
