Confirmed: Cleveland City Stars Are Going up

Published by Dave at 12:15 pm under Association Football

Canada.com is reporting that the Cleveland City Stars, who won the USL-2 title last season, are moving up to USL-1 in 2009. It’s as if there’s promotion and relegation in American soccer. Who knew?

So with the Seattle Sounders moving to MLS and the Atlanta Silverbacks suspending operations, the Cleveland City Stars and the Austin Aztex will keep USL-1 at 11 teams for the 2009 season.

Reports were emerging about this yesterday, but for whatever reason, someone got the initial report pulled off the web. That seems silly. If USL really wants to compete with MLS, why would the league try to stop news from circulating among its fan base? Are bigger announcements due to emerge from these USL meetings?

There needs to be a real relegation in soccer.
There is no reason why pathetic teams like Toronto should stay up and stink up the joint.
