Alexi Lalas, shown here explaining why Victoria Beckham will never leave her husband, has reportedly been sacked by the L.A. Galaxy today. Head coach Ruud Gullit also submitted his resignation. This comes a week after the Galaxy’s embarrassing 3-2 loss to the expansion San Jose Earthquakes. L.A. has taken 3 points in its last 7 MLS games and has fallen out of playoff position.
That loud cackling sound you hear? Yeah, that’s just Steven Cohen. Pay it no mind.
As GM of the Galaxy, Lalas put together a team that consisted of two superstars and a bunch of scrubs, which is a great recipe for a pub team, but it doesn’t constitute a “superclub,” and it certainly won’t get you anywhere in a top-flight domestic league. The fact that the Galaxy have given up 40 goals in 19 games should tell you that. This club is all marketing hype and no substance — much like Lalas as a GM, actually. But hey, he sure sold a ton of those Beckham jerseys, didn’t he?
If nothing else, the sacking of Lalas proves that AEG at least gives a crap that their team is losing. That’s more than we can say for William Clay Ford.
