When It All Happens at Once

The obvious trouble with attempting to follow every form of football around the world is that you’re bound to miss things — especially when the rest of your life gets in the way.

I had intended to get up a little early this morning to catch the second half of the Geelong Cats v. Port Adelaide Power rematch. (Geelong won, by the way.) However, last night I got wrapped up in getting my NCAA Tournament brackets filled out and setting up that bracket pool for my college buddies, getting my shiny new Slingbox set up for remote viewing — sadly, a day too late to watch that corker between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur on my Treo while at work — and putting up FanHouse posts on the CONCACAF Champions Cup and Cristiano Ronaldo’s deadly aim.

Oh, and the girlfriend stopped by last night. Always a pleasant distraction, to be sure.

Suffice to say, I missed the AFL opener. It’s not all I miss around here. On Monday, I was going to write something about Gaelic Football for St. Patrick’s Day, which turned into St. Vincent’s Day in Dublin. That passed me by, too.

Three years ago around this time, I sat in front of my PC and thought, “What the hell am I going to write about on this blog for the next five months?” Then I shut it down, went to a sports bar and watched basketball all afternoon.

So when I wrote back in January that I wanted to shift things around a bit, this was why. Writing about the football in all its forms is fun, but I’m starting to think the origins and evolution of football is a subject better suited to a book than a blog. Maybe that’s what I should be writing. Hell, maybe half of it is already written here…

    Dave

If you ever need a hand to write some content on AFL Football then I would be more than happy to do a weekly wrap or something for you. It may just lighten your workload a bit.

It was great to see the season start and the Grand Final Re Match was certainly entertaining. Geelong are showing that they certainly should be favorites again.

Shoot me an email Dave and we can chat…..

  2. [...] Port Adelaide dominated the Ruck with the absence of Otttens and should have made more use of it. They missed a perfect opportunity there. Also is was very evident that they need some experience in the back half as Mooney and “Tomahawk” Tom Hawkins exploited this in the first half. Brett Ebert looked dangerous and Chad Cornes is an out and out GUN. The Power have a bit of work to do in the defensive half and will no doubt be working on that during the week. It was a good game to watch and Dave from Dave’s Football Blog is sorry he missed the game. [...]

While I was tremendously happy that I was watching the Cats win and not listening on the net, as I have done for the last few years, I was let down by the lack of a more robust AFL schedule on Setanta. This if my first year as a subscriber, and as I am not a soccer fan, all I will be getting out of it is 1 to 3 Footy games a week, the AFL highlights show and some NRL from time to time. I can’t believe they cant show at least 4 or 5 games.

Tony: That’s one reason why I’d like to see some other sports network with some leftover airtime give the AFL a go. If we’re only going to get 2 games a week, we shouldn’t have to pay an extra $15 a month to watch them. It’s enough to make me go back to BitTorrent, really.

Ando: I’ll be in touch once I’ve gotten over my acute case of March Madness…

Dave, how are you feeling about the potential UNC-Indiana matchup in the second round? You’re going to be a lonely figure in your crimson and cream…

Brian: Honestly, I’m not sure Indiana will get that far. They lost 3 of 4 coming into the tourney, and they look like they’ve given up on the season since figuring out who their coach is.

That said, D.J. White v. Tyler Hansbrough would be the biggest matchup of overachievers this side of Barnsley v. Cardiff, only with more talent.
