The Colors of Our Tribes

These gents are members of the Sons of Ben, Philadelphia’s soccer supporters group that officially got a club to support today when Major League Soccer, as we had expected them to do for the last week or so, announced that the Illadelph would be home to an expansion franchise that begins play in 2010.
I find their choice of colors intriguing. You wouldn’t expect baby blue and yellow in a primary color town like Philly. Those colors wouldn’t happen to have anything to do with…

YIKES!!! Perhaps it’s best just not to think about this and move on.

Baby blue and yellow are the colors of the Philadelphia flag.
Y’know. I had no clue that the city of Philadelphia had a flag.

I guess that explains the monstrosity that was those Eagles throwbacks.
Thanks, Andrew.
Ah, sweet, I love reading the hate messages from the anti-soccer bigots over there at that Philly site that you linked to. Every new SSS (soccer specific stadium) that MLS builds is another nail in their coffin, and they know it.
Yes, baby blue or powder blue or sky blue or whatever it is, and yellow, are the colors of the Philadelphia flag which is why the SOB have adopted it as their colors. I hope the new Philly MLS team adopts those colors, too (sky blue and yellow vertical stripes would be nice looking and traditional too); no one else in MLS is using those colors. There are too many teams in MLS using red, black, white, etc. Some more odd colors would be nice for a change (purple anyone? maroon/burgundy/claret? grey/gray? brown? green?) as would some actual traditional footy style uniforms with stripes, hoops, alternating sleeves, halves and quarters, chest-v’s, sashes, etc. I really hate the drab uniformity that Nike/Adidas (or whoever it is now) imposes on MLS when it comes to uniform designs, not to mention their sheer cluelessness in terms of understanding what is traditional in soccer uniforms (Chivas USA and FC Dallas are honorable exceptions in that regard).
As to colors and the city flag, there’s no knowing what the new Philly team will pick. Chicago has a city flag too, which I think influenced Chicago Fire supporters, but Chicago Fire did not use that flag when deciding on its colors or badge design. I do hope Philly MLS choses the sky blue and yellow color scheme though.
No official announcement of the Philly MLS team name yet? Rumor over at Big Soccer has it that it will be something like Philadelphia Independence FC (based on registered website names), which is a good name, but who knows what they will eventually pick.
Chicago Fire’s old 3rd choice jersey was a beautiful light blue recreation of the flag of Chicago.
However, it was made by Puma; when Adidas secured the 10 year exclusive apparel supplier contract, they decided not to continue that jersey, to the dismay of Fire fans.
