This video clip has been all over the webtertubes this week, but it’s worth another look, just for its historical significance. It’s a TV spot from 50 years ago — complete with horribly stereotyped cartoon mascots — in which Marlboro cigarettes declares itself a proud sponsor of the National Football League.
There must be some old ads like this for football in other countries, right? I mean, aside from the old “Accrington Stanley? Who’er dey?” spot…

It’s interesting to try to identify the teams by the crazy-bastard mascot… I missed the tweety-bird (Chicago Cardinals, which apparently enjoyed wandering up to Green Bay and getting hacked at by the Packers a lot) and the insane bearded dude (the Niners).

Jeff: The Cardinals have been getting butchered by a lot of teams for a long, long, long time.

Yeah, the Cardinals are the second oldest team in the league, and they have pretty much been mediocre to bad the entire time. Amazing feat, really.
NOOO!! Steely McBeam went back in time to sear my brain again! I didn’t want to see HIM in the video! I have to perform more hexes to get him away from the Steelers. At this rate, he’s going to insert himself into Steeler history from the moment that Art Rooney bought the team.
