Kevin Sheedy Thinks Roger Goodell Is a Wimp
If you thought the NFL playing regular season games outside of the U.S. was a silly idea, legendary AFL coach Kevin Sheedy would beg to differ with you. He thinks the AFL should go further than the NFL.
“Round one should always be played overseas in the next 10 years. Round one could get auctioned like the grand prix races do. You could then play the other 21 rounds in Australia – that would be a better way to take the game around the world.”
Great idea, Mr. Sheedy. There’s no better way of appealing to fans in your home country than putting the top league’s opening weekend everywhere else.
If the AFL wanted to do like the NFL and take one regular season game to play elsewhere, that’s one thing. You could find an audience for Aussie Rules in England, Ireland, South Africa, and even America. But the entire first week of the season? Could you imagine playing the entire first week of the NFL season in Mexico, England, Japan and any other country except the U.S.?
Maybe ol’ Kev is trying to put an outrageous idea out there to make the less outrageous idea look rational. He’s cagey that way. He has to know what he’s suggesting won’t happen between now and the heat death of the universe, right? Right?

He is a pretty smart operator Sheedy and this will be just another attempt to bring more attention to the AFL and the game of Australian Rules Football. Which I guess is his job as an AFL Ambassador.
But an entire round outside of Australia with not one game here wouldn’t go down that well one would think.
