Gameday in America

Published by Dave at 10:36 am under American Football

It has been a fantastic week for all forms of football this week — the Rugby World Cup in France, the AFL and NRL Finals Series in Australia, and EURO 2008 qualifiers all over the continent. Everywhere you look, football is happening somewhere.

Make no mistake, though — this is America’s day for football. The NFL remains our national obsession, the one thing that brings people together on Sunday afternoons from September to January. It doesn’t matter if the rest of the world doesn’t understand our football game. How many people understand Aussie Rules outside of Australia? How many people understand Gaelic Football outside of Ireland? No, what matters is that this is our football game played at its highest level, and we shall fill living rooms and sports bars all over the country to follow it.

I have a lot of games to watch today. I’m following the Carolina Panthers as they take on the St. Louis Rams. The Jacksonville Jaguars try to find an answer for Vince Young and the Tennessee Titans. (Just wait for that Madden Curse to kick in, folks.) And of course, I’m keeping an eye on the Pittsburgh Steelers as they battle the Cleveland Browns.

One thing I won’t be doing, though, is liveblogging my afternoons. Quite honestly, it never pulled the web traffic I had hoped it would, and keeping up with multiple games and the blog is just a little too much. If you want to see some blogs during the games today, I recommend NFL FanHouse and Deadspin. The KSK Gay Mafia has taken over Deadspin this weekend, so it’s bound to be a party.

In the meantime, I’m going to go find a suitable sports bar to satiate my gridiron appetite. Enjoy the games, everyone. The NFL is back, folks. It’s gonna be a glorious day.
