Goalposts on Parade

This site has always been more about pro football than amateur football, so I never really say much about college football in America here. Still, if I could have picked any place to be on Saturday, it would have been the sleepy hamlet of Boone, North Carolina, home of Appalachian State University.

You’ve probably heard by now that App State, the defending I-AA champions, upset Michigan yesterday, 34-32, and it sparked quite a party. The only thing missing was Ray Hudson telling people how much lovin’ there would be on that campus that night.

Ripping out the goalposts is a standard college football celebration around here. No one ever knows what to do with them beyond carrying them around and yelling a lot, but they usually think of something. The ASU students dropped their goalposts in the chancellor’s driveway. When UC Santa Barbara won the NCAA soccer championship last year, students grabbed the nearest goal they could find and threw it in the ocean. That looked like quite the party, too, actually…
