So apparently, I am “Mr. AOL” now.
Will has alerted me to the fact that a piece I wrote at FanHouse that’s basically a list of suggestions for how MLS could be improved made it onto a messageboard called BigSoccer.com. It’s actually kind of fun to see people who don’t know me from a can of paint heckle the crap out of something I wrote:
“Wow, it’s like every stupid idea on BigSoccer combined into one column. I suppose I could give him some credit for that.”
“AOL didn’t go bankrupt yet?”
“The supsrising thing in all of this was that AOL had an opinion about how to improve MLS. AOL?”
See, it’s one thing when an ordinary blogger writes about how he can’t be arsed to care about MLS, but when it’s under an AOL masthead, all the ordinary rules go right out the window. It’s not just a blog anymore. It’s AOL. Thus, sports fans who have no clue about sports blogging — and let’s be honest, this is still a very, very large number — think it actually has journalistic clout, when really, it’s just a bunch of bloggers having a go, singing songs about Freddy Adu and such.
It’s almost as if FanHouse exists as a sociological media experiment. Let’s see how people react to a sports blog when it has a big corporate masthead on top of it.
“AOL is a media-whore of a company that has turned its front page into pointless tips and tabloid gossip. Who is this author, and why should I care what he has to say?”
You probably shouldn’t, but hey, I’m glad you do. It makes me feel much better about my own media whoring.

Dave, eventually I will SHAME you into supporting MLS.

Also, I want to point out that I didn’t create the site listed as my “Home page;” I just like the format.

Will: Good luck with that. After looking at that US Open Cup bracket, I’d say all the shame right now is on those filthy Beckham whores in MLS.

Your article was fine actually. Those idiots on BigSoccer don’t have a clue… most of the time anyway. The only thing I’d say you got wrong in your suggestions is the superliga spot going to USOC winner… that will never happens because superliga is and MLS deal, not a USSF Deal. Maybe give the USOC winner a spot in the Concacaf Cup. Otherwise, a very good article.

I agree with the commenter George.
The only additional suggestion I would have (probably one for distant future) is that if / when MLS finally gets a chance to play in the Copa Libertadores, give one of the spots to USOC winner. In the mean time, perhaps, a CCC spot would be sufficient inducment.
Otherwise, a good article, in my opinion.
