Gridiron World Cup Opens with a Blowout
So the 2007 American Football World Cup opened yesterday, and a guy named Tommy Wiking, who is the president of IFAF, really wanted to play this up as much as possible:
“One thing we know in this tournament is we`re going to have some great games. For the first time, we have the United States here, which is much important, and it`s going to be the best tournament.”
Apparently, by “great games,” he meant “big fat blowouts.” Japan won the opener against white-flag waving France by a score of 42-0 48-0. Folks, Japan is not dicking around with you people. They own this trophy, and someone’s going to have to pry it from their cold dead hands.
Presumably, that would be the ragtag bunch of Americans spending a week in the land of the rising sun. They play South Korea on Tuesday, but first South Korea has to play Germany today. The scores in this tournament could get really, really ugly…

It was actually 48-0. What should be interesting to see tomorrow is to what degree the US lines push around the smaller, less experienced opponent. Of course, by “see” I mean “read about” because it doesn’t look like we’re going to be seeing much of anything.
