The David Beckham advertising machine is coming to America, and New Orleans Saints star Reggie Bush, whose most recent football memory may have been the most ill-timed end zone dance ever, is getting caught up in the hype. Shoe giant adidas is filming a commercial in which Beckham and Bush swap football codes for a day.
Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time the soon-to-be L.A. Galaxy star (What do you call a guy who plays for the Galaxy, anyway? A Galaxian?) has done a commercial in which he practices with a player from another football code. A few years ago, adidas filmed a spot in which English rugby star Johnny Wilkinson taught Beckham how kick a penalty…
It’s a very British spot, isn’t it? Very quiet, very understated, and I suspect very much unlike how the new commercial will be.
Incidentally, Beckham was invited to be a guest lecturer at Bush’s alma mater, the University of Southern California, to discuss the role of football in diplomacy. Coincidence? Somehow, I have my doubts.
UPDATE: It appears Jonny Wilkinson may get a real shot at the NFL himself. Interesting…
