Oops

Published by Dave at 10:36 pm under Association Football

I’ve been accused by commenters of being an ignorant American when it comes to all these other football codes. They’re probably right, too. On the other hand, at least I don’t screw up quite as royally as Jeremy St. Louis did here on a Fox Soccer Channel postgame.

I blame Jesse Marsch. If the Chivas USA player didn’t trade jerseys with his opponents after the game, this wouldn’t have happened. Stupid centuries-old football tradition…

It would be confusing but a commentator should still know the players whatever they might be wearing. A funny piece of footage saved for posterity. I guess he will never be able to live that down.

    Totally cringeworthy.

As they explained in the part cut out just after that clip, the player in question USED TO play for Chicago Fire, so Jeremy St. Louis’ slip isn’t that hard to understand. He knew the player, he remembered him when he played for the Fire, he was wearing a Fire jersey….so, he goofs.

Unlike the TV guys, when you or I screw up at our place of work, it’s not something most people know about. We don’t have the blogosphere breathing down our necks, micro-critiquing everything we do.

It was funny because just a few days before I did that interview with Jesse, I was asked what my most embarassing moment as a broadcaster was - I couldn’t think of anything good.

    I should’ve known I’d get something soon enough….Karma perhaps?

There is no excuse - I messed up and I’ve enjoyed reading comments about it. It’s a good learning experience. And when I’m in Chicago in a couple weeks, I’m going to thank Jim Curtin personally for passing it along to his blogging buddies.

Sad to hear about Sarachen - he’s one of the sports true gentleman.

    Thanks for posting this!

    Cheers!
