See that guy in the photo? That’s Daniel Kerr of the West Coast Eagles. He didn’t play this week after getting suspended for trying to choke a bitch on the pitch last weekend. Guess what happened this weekend?
Hawthorn Hawks 99, West Coast Eagles 64. Just to remind people that they aren’t a bunch of flooding tossers, Hawthorn blew this game wide open with a 7-goal 3rd quarter to knock off the mighty Eagles, thrilling more than 18,000 upset-minded fans in Tasmania. Tim Boyle and Luke Hodge had three goals each for the ladder-climbing Hawks, while only five guys got on the scoreboard for West Coast, who still managed to hang on to first place…
Geelong Cats 116, Port Adelaide Power 60. …because the Power couldn’t capitalize. In fact, Geelong, which started the season 2-3, has ridden a 4-match winning streak — including a win over West Coast and that 157-point thrashing of Richmond — all the way to second place in the AFL standings. This one was never close, either — the Cats outscored the Power 87-16 in the first half. Max Rooke had three goals for Geelong. Port’s now on a two-game losing streak. What happened to them, anyway?
Sydney Swans 100. Western Bulldogs 57. Don’t look now, but here come the Swans. Even without Tadhg Kennelly and Nick Davis in the lineup, they took it to the Bulldogs in front of a packed house on the Gold Coast. (Sure, Manuka Oval only holds 15,000 people, but hey, a packed house is a packed house, right, Mr. Demetriou?) Michael O’Loughlin kicked 4 goals for the Eagles to lead all scorers.
Collingwood Magpies 120, Brisbane Lions 87. While the Swans are rising, the Lions are falling, and falling fast. A 5-goal performance by Mitchell Clark won’t save you if nobody else scores. Collingwood kicked 6 goals in the 4th quarter to pull away in this one, spoiling Lions star Simon Black’s 200th game.
Kangaroos 79, Melbourne Demons 78. Your leading scorer of the week is Shannon Grant of the Kangaroos, who put up 5 goals and 3 behinds as the ‘Roos held off a furious 4th-quarter charge by the Demons to stay in the top half of the ladder. Andrew Swallow kicked the game-winner for the ‘Roos with a minute left to deny Melbourne, which has put Richmond back in wooden spoon position, though not by much.
Adelaide Crows 105, Carlton Blues 86. Meanwhile, Adelaide quietly climbed into 3rd place in the AFL standings with a win over the Blues, who have now lost 6 straight and have given up a league-worst 1,114 points so far this season. Scott Welsh had 4 goals for the Crows, and Luke Jericho and Jason Porplyzia, whose name would get big points in Scrabble (if that game allowed proper names), had 3 goals apiece. Brendan Fevola? 2 goals, 3 behinds. Better luck next time, Fev.
All the Round 9 scores and current standings are available from the AFL web site and, of course, Wikipedia. Additional stats are also available from the fine folks at Footywire.

Hey nice blog you’ve got going here. Hope to see some more Fremantle Dockers news in the round 10 round up, I’m a big Freo fan and Friday night is a big game against the Collingwood Magpies over at the MCG.
By the way the other Western Australian team the West Coast Eagles have got super star Chris Judd back to play against the in form Kangaroos, surviving accusations of eye gouging after round 9′s class with Hawthorn. Bit of controversy there this week.

Just to ask any chance of finding out which started 1st, afl(arena football league, usa ,american football) or afl (aussie rules) as surely one or the other secured the rights or cross continent branding laws were broken by one or the other.
could this be a big story and would this effect a push into the us market for aussie rules???
