Last week I mentioned that beach soccer was slowly building a following around the world. The above video shows a few highlights from a Brazil-USA matchup at the last Beach Soccer World Cup, so you can get an idea of what it looks like.
Of course, if you live in America and can’t get to Brazil (or England) to see some live beach soccer, you have two opportunities coming up in the next few months. The Southern California Beach Soccer Championship takes place in Oceanside in 2 weeks, Virginia Beach hosts the North American Sand Soccer Championships the second weekend in June, and Daytona Beach hosts the 17th annual Soccer on the Beach Tournament the following weekend.
I’m debating whether I prefer something like this over, say, futsal, an indoor 5-on-5 game where the ball actually rolls around a bit…
Futsal might be a faster, flashier 5-on-5 game overall, but the opportunity to see more bikini-clad Brazilian women does tilt things in beach soccer’s favor, doesn’t it?
