A Place for Rugby F(r)iends

Published by Dave at 8:22 am under Rugby Football

Like rugby? Like social networking? Here’s the online timesink hangout for you: Ruggerspace. It’s literally a Myspace clone geared specifically toward rugby lovers. You girly socceroos can go hang out somewhere else. (Not that girls aren’t welcome here, of course. Rugby chicks dig a good ruck.)

Anyway, if you enjoy a good rugger match, feel free to join Ruggerspace and argue for hours about whether league or union is better, and maybe get yourself a date for the next USA Sevens tournament in February.

What’s “Sevens,” you ask? As this comment mentioned, rugby sevens is basically rugby union with 7 players instead of 15, except that it’s played on the same size field as a regular rugby match. Also, because the field is so wide open, matches last for only 15 minutes. This allows organizers to fit an entire tournament into one afternoon if they want. The format was created by a butcher in Scotland back in 1883 as a fundraiser, and the International Rugby Board liked it so much they gave it an official sanction. Good on the butcher, eh?

Rugby league has a sevens format as well, though the primary league sevens tournament hasn’t been played in a while.

Here’s a fantastic video of the legend Waseli Serevi and the protege William Ryder making international opponents look like schoolboys. Enjoy.

I know you are kidding with that “girly socceroos” talk, but be careful. There are some rugby fans who really do talk like that, and mean it. It’s quite absurd really. I’ve never heard a soccer fan bash rugby (at least it doesn’t seem to happen here in the USA). Football code bigotry is a weird phenomena.
