AFL Round 2 Roundup: Break Up the Lions!

Published by Dave at 9:17 am under Australian Football

Another week of AFL action is in the books. Here’s a quick rundown of the weekend’s big games:

Brisbane Lions 102, St. Kilda Saints 50. This might as well have been Lions v. Christians. Brisbane held a pregame retirement party for former captain Michael Voss, then proceeded to stomp the Saints mercilessly. Two big wins in a row for Brisbane are leading some to ask if we’ve underestimated this team. Jonathan Brown — shown here controlling the movement of the ball with his brain — led the way with 5 goals, and Justin Sherman added 3 goals and 2 behinds for Brisbane.

West Coast Eagles 87, Collingwood Magpies 75. The kids are alright in Perth. Despite the continued absence of big Dean Cox and in the ruck and other veterans in the lineup, the Eagles are off to a 2-0 start. Head coach John Worsfold threw the Eagles’ youngsters out there, and they continued to show they were match-worthy. David Wirrpanda, a noted defender who surprisingly shifted to forward in this one, led the way with 3 goals and 3 behinds.

Essendon Bombers 122, Fremantle Dockers 112. Essendon is also off to a 2-0 start, thanks in part to one Scott Lucas, who is your leading goal scorer in the AFL right now with 12 total, including 5 in this one. The going opinion among AFL fans right now is that Fremantle sucks, but it sure looks like they kept this one close.

Sydney Swans 88, Richmond Tigers 72. The Swans played better than they did in their opening-round loss to West Coast, but all is not well in Sydney. Barry Hall hurt his knee early in the game, and while he returned after the injury, he didn’t look so good out there. Head coach Paul Roos called it a medial strain and said Hall would be 50-50 for next week’s game against Brisbane, which looks kind of important for this early in the season. Losing Hall for any length of time would be really bad for Sydney.

Geelong Cats 162, Carlton Blues 84. Damn. No, seriously, damn. If you thought Lions v. Saints was a stomping, get a load of Geelong’s 24-goal performance, which their coach said was “fun to watch.” I’m sure the Blues fans disagree. Cameron Mooney and Nathan Ablett had 5 goals each, while Brendan Fevola was held without a goal. Fantasy wonks are cursing under their breath over this one.

Port Adelaide Power 122, Kangaroos 104. Speaking of fantasy footy, you might want to look into picking up Brett Ebert if he’s available. Ebert had 5 goals in this one and has scored 51 points so far this season. The Power have busted 120 for the second week in a row. If this keeps up, they might be the late-80s Loyola Marymount of the AFL.

All the Round 2 scores and current standings are available from the AFL web site and, of course, Wikipedia.
