Nonsense all this,
These guys are sportspeople. Their job is to achieve feets of athleticism and sporting skill the rest of us cannot, and entertain us in the process. Sports bodies are better off leaving them to their own devices. If rec. drugs begin affecting their performance or their club, then they'll pay the price that way. This is public life vs. private life stuff and the guy has had his privacy stripped mercilessly - and he's actually yet to test positive. And as for the role model issue... the argument runs both ways. If sports idols are not drug addicts or are drug addicts but their impressionable fans don't know about it, what's the difference?

What's happened here is a truly great Aussie Rules footballer's career has been destroyed because of an overzealous and - for reasons some in the know will understand - double-standard wielding AFL administration. The losers are the player, of course, but mainly the fans.

Sports is either war without guns - in which case its not supposed to be pretty - or pure fantasy - in which case all we want are superstar athletes parading their skills on the weekend for our escapism. What they do off the field during the week is, either way, irrelevant.

An interesting blog with a good cross section of the usual views. But lets not get carried away. Ben stuffed up big time, and not just once. I was (and still am if I'm honest) one of the greatest Bennie fans going. I admired and marvelled at what he did on the footy field and ignored what he did off it!
But at the end of the day Ben is a drug addict - not a murderer. Drugs covers all sorts of things including alcohol and tobacco, but those drugs are socially acceptable. ICE is not, and for good reason. However we need to avoid being hypocrits here - especially those of us who have had the odd drink or two, and I think that covers most of us. We all indulge in drugs to some extent and probably always will. We will say so long as its kept to a "reasonable" limit then its ok. But everyone has a different view as to what's reasonable. Ben's wasn't "reasonable" in my view, but at least he didn't seem to let it carry over into violence harm or aggression to others and therefore maybe he sees it as "reasonable".
Lets just leave Ben alone to deal with what he faces. Sure he was a role model, and for a long time was a good one, and was much admired by all. But lots of people stuff up, including a lot of sports people and so called role models. I think to some extent this might have a good side in showing others what can happen as a result of their actions and choices, and make them think a little harder before going down that road.
Someone once said "we are only the sum of the choices we make" (or something like that), so lets try to make some good ones ourselves and leave poor old Ben to deal with the ones he has made in his own way. If we concentrate more on judging ourselves it will no doubt be more productive.

anyone that gets themselves involved in drugs is an idiot, but the media has given ben cousins a huge amount of attention, which ia a little unfaif, don't you think?. Just because he is a footy player. There are several people who take drugs, or have been involved, in drug related offences, are they getting this type of attention. This picture isn'y showing anything, everyone has their odd moments infront of a camera.

Thanks Nigel for pointing us to the original photo. Now we know he hangs out with clowns while cracked off his head. Junkie see, junkie do, junkie did and junkie got busted. Thank god I won't have to see his smug face on telly all year. Good bye crack nose Cousins. Enjoy rehab... or should i say schoolies week in Surfers Paradise! Rehab's really going well.

That picture is photoshopped BTW
If you do a google search for Ben Cousins High
the original of that picture shows up.

The guy on the right is not in the original picture
a flash was used when taking the picture
there is no evidence of a flash used on the man in this picture.

The original guy in the picture with ben cousins has Red Eyes as caused by a Flash which also may explain why Ben's eyes are semi - closed

Original Picture

Whilst I agree that picture doesn't look good - it is actually quite irresponsible of the person taking the picture and the person in the picture. Did they offer him any help? Like that other cockhead in Melbourne that took a picture of Ben Cousins lying on the ground, because that's really the first thing you should do - if you are Paparazzi scum.

The picture also could be a very drunk person it isn't necessarily a stoned person. The simple fact is for all the Media Crap about Ben Cousins - the ONLY proof they have is that Ben Cousins admitted to being a recovering drug addict, the rest is hearsay and would not stand up in any court.

Yes I am a Ben Cousins fan, because quite simply he is the best footballer I have ever seen. The truth is he is not innocent, but he is nothing like the media have been portraying him. They glamorize Gary Ablett and a girl died of a drug overdose whilst staying in a room with him.

And while we are on the topic has everyone forgotten the fact that Alan Didak (Collingwood) was driving around with an underworld killer?

Ben Cousins has been punished by the AFL although he never harmed anyone except himself. It's a bit hypocritical that the AFL punishes "Drug Users" but are quite happy about other players assaulting members of the public.

No Ben Cousins is not innocent and neither is the media.

No. I don't feel what you are saying is particularly logical. What you have provided in this blog is a whole lot of so-called "evidence" which happens to be made up of mostly rumours and speculation. All the information you've presented you haven't heard with your own two ears, it has come to you second-hand through media sources like the internet and the newspapers. The press distort the facts and make things out to be juicier then they seem so people will want to read/view etc. As a Saint Kilda fan, if I believed everything I read about my team on the internet and in the newspapers then I would say that St. Kilda are all alcoholics/addicted to booze, we are the Melbourne team that is the centre of the on-going 'drug scandal', and Nick Dal Santo is a 'weak-as-piss woman.' I know as much about the truth about the "culture" or what goes on in the West Coast football club as the next person -and thats not alot. And unless you hear things FIRST HAND from someone inside the club or you yourself ARE someone inside the club, you will never know the absolute truth. So really, my point here is that I don't believe that the West Coast Eagles are "a bandwagon of crackheads" as you so nicely put it, and because you believe it and write about it you are ultimately being very stereotypical and spreading the rumours further. At this point, Ben Cousins was caught for drugs and as far as anyone knows for certain, the rest of the team are clean. Sure many people will argue this, but it is because they are a high-profile team (being the reigning premiers will do that to you) with high-profile players and people take more notice of their scandals and do a fair bit more speculation/gossiping then they would about say, Collingwood. Personally I feel West Coast are a decent side, and from what I've seen their players look like pretty nice blokes. I don't think this is the team you should be picking on. Just as a side note: The Saints are a great club and we'd definitely be after some more supporters:)

Um, ya know there is the possibility that this is just a bad photo of Ben? I'm pretty sure I've had a few shocker photos in my lifetime that look much like this and at no point was I ever on drugs... Who hasn't blinked during the flash?! I'm not arguing that Ben did drugs, he did and it was wrong, but he cleaned himself up and he's taking whatever opposition fans throw at him. He worked hard to get back on the field and I respect the way he plays the game. What happens off the field isn't actually any of our business.

Settle, Courtney.

You're clearly pretty fond of Benny, but your arguments are paper thin.

You've attempted to tar every club as having it's share of drug users. Nice use of the 'aww,.. Dad, but everyone's doing it' excuse.

Put up the proof or shut up. Ben's father has admitted substance abuse, Ben has spent time at a high profile substance abuse rehab center and Ben has happily agreed to a rigorous regime of drug testing as part of his return to the AFL. Like it or not, Benny is AFL's first confirmed illicit drug addict.

You say your club has 'just been honest'. Rubbish. Forget about the continuous rumours of his lifestyle over the past 5 years.

He famously ran from police 12 months ago. Are we to believe that Ben was just drunk and forgot it was ok to be drunk as a passenger? There are only two reasons you exit a car to run from police.

1) You stole the car (and we know it was his car).
2) You have illegal substance on your person/in your system and are afraid of being detected.

It was patently clear at that time he was on something and afraid of getting caught, but West Coast were perfectly happy to ignore the 100 ft red writing on the wall.

It took another 12 months and Ben's increasingly ratty and unpredictable behavior for West Coast to have no other choice but to act.

Why not write something about the dockers now for all their dramas in the last few months, or carlton or collingwood???

I think your a totally IDIOT!
One thing you must be blind to is that fact that nearly every single AFL club is or has done drugs! Perth or the eagles should i say Have just been HONEST.
I have an idea, why don't you get a photo of everyone YOU know who does drugs in your life. And write blogs about them??? Oh wait, then you would be entering THEIR private life.

Guess what, you just done the same thing. You arent an eagles fan so dont say you are. I have been an eagles supporter since i was 2years old and i have not once stopped suporting the eagles.

You have no right in writing such allegations against people in which you don't know.
I have met Ben Cousins on several occasions and for all you know he could have been drinking in this photo, but even so, are you going to say no to players drinking, cause im sure thats NOT a crime.

Stop and think about what your writing next time you go and write some crap like this.

All eagles fans will agree.

Well I support Sahipae. Brian, yes it is the footy stars who make those choices, but unlike you or I we are not subject to enormous pressures and influences like Michael Gardner. They have pressure and stress which can lead to low moods and even depression. Then add someone offering you drugs or pressuring you to take it- with your self control worn away by the pressures of society, what are you gonna do? He probably felt like he didn't have a choice.
Many celebrities and people with money resort to drugs, possibly more so than normal people because they cannot handle the pressures that fame brings. Just look at Paris, who drove drunk and now has ended up in jail, Lindsy Lohan, possibly cocain and other drugs, Mel Gibson- alcohol, the recently deceased Anna Nicole who died from a drug overdose, Elvis- lotsa drugs, Fergie- used to be on cocain and ice, and the list goes on...
I blame the pressures that being a famous footballer brings, always under scrutiny, always having to perform like a superhuman.
Good on him for coming forward and admitting his drug problem and trying to get it fixed. Its a lot more than other footballers who are probably on drugs are doing. He should be rewarded for coming forward, not punished. That will make other footy players who are on drugs not want to confess their drug problems.

Hi Dave and Shaipae,

First off, i posted the image you're showing in one of my own blog posts, that condemned Ben Cousins big time for his blatant disregard of the role model he is to the youth of today. Not to forget the blemish he puts on the AFL game and further contributes to tarnish the overall reputation of "sports stars".

Sahipae, i absolutely disagree with your statement that these sports heros are "victims of society" which takes the blame of their own actions out of their hands and allows them to do (in their own mind at least) whatever they want to. Just because you're a big star i've yet to see society demand somebody jab a needle in their arm or sniff coke. In a society where you are responsible for your own actions it's paramount we don't give these sports heros an out when it comes to them skipping their responsibilities, and not to forget, the law.

I still dont see why money and power means you have to resort to hard drugs and if it actually was the case we'd be seeing Steve Jobs sniffing coke on a regular basis.

I'd say bravo to Dave for taking the stance that this is simply not acceptable. Debacle after debacle from idiotic sports heros leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth...

I think that the media blows things out of proportion; afterall Ben Cousins was only suspended for braking one of the team rules (he failed to attend training). Recently, West Coast decided it was time to crack down on players braking the rules and that is fair enough.

That doesn't however remove the fact that there are problems in the sporting world. Not just in West Coast or in the AFL but in all sports. Famous people have money and with money comes power and with power comes the ability to missuse it.

Unfortunately we see too many people missusing such power in the world. That is the result of youngers being pushed into the limelight at such young ages. Many sports allow people to play on a country-wide level at the mere age of 18. As for the music and televison/movie industries; they thrust people into the limelight from much younger ages in some cases.

These victims of society get all that power before they have learnt how to live fulfilling lives. Consequently they are left trying to fill the void with girlfriend to girlfriend, party to party or drug to drug. Just look at holliwood, it's a prime example of the problem.

You could become a Kangaroos fan. Pretty sweet logo, decent history, and considering their finish last year, you wouldn't really be considered a bandwagon jumper.

Everyone wins!
