Cowher’s Carolina connections

Published by Dave at 1:07 pm under Old DFB Archives

Bill Cowher may be the prince of Pittsburgh right now, but he has strong ties to North Carolina. He played linebacker for NC State, where his wife and sister-in-law played college basketball. The Cowher family also owns a home on Bald Head Island.

So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Bill & his family appear to be making plans to settle in Raleigh after his coaching stint with the Steelers is done. It’s a nice place to live. Lots of magazine and web site editors think so, anyway.

So no more questions about how this blogger living in central North Carolina became a Steelers fan. There are plenty of terrible towels to go around down here.

Upon retirement, many people who grew up in and love Pennsylvania move down to North Carolina (or even further south), seeking warmer climes and golf.

Cowher just has the money to buy the house now, as opposed to having to wait until he actually wants to leave because he cannot afford a house until he sells his current one.

That, and I can see the allure of someday shedding the high pressure mantle of NFL coach, moving to NC, and then accepting an offer from NC State to coach the Wolfpack. Seeing how he may be only 55-60 when he retires (if he decides to hang it up after 20 years, which is an eternity for an NFL coach), he may decide that going for that second job is exactly what he wants to do.

I can’t see Cowher as head football coach at NC State after winning a Super Bowl in Pittsburgh. He might prefer to step in as an athletic director, though.
