Jerome Bettis will return for one more season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. This is expected to be his final season in the NFL, and it should help the Steelers remain one of the best running teams in the game.
Now if they can only find a suitable deep threat to replace Plaxico Burress…

Less than 24 hours after he was released by the salary cap-strapped Carolina Panthers, wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad signed with the Chicago Bears.
Damn, that was fast…

From AP:
Muhsin Muhammad was released by Carolina on Friday, after the Panthers were unable to come to terms with the All-Pro receiver.
The Panthers had been trying to re-negotiate Muhammad’s contract because his current deal would have counted more than $12 million against the salary cap in the coming season.
But talks between the Panthers and Muhammad’s agent broke down earlier this week and Carolina was forced to release him before he was due a $10 million roster bonus on March 1.
“The efforts to get a contract extension on Muhsin were unsuccessful and we have decided to release him,” general manager Marty Hurney said. “Muhsin has been a valuable member of our team and we appreciate everything he has done for the Panthers.”
Muhammad holds all of Carolina’s receiving records with 578 catches for 7,751 yards receiving. He shares the team record for touchdowns with Wesley Walls at 44.
That leaves Steve Smith and Keary Colbert as the Panthers’ top two receivers. John Fox better hope they stay healthy next season…

…and the Carolina Panthers have until Monday at 4:00 PM to strike a deal with All-Pro wideout Muhsin Muhammad or release him because of salary cap limitations.
I don’t think the Steelers will take a shot at Muhammad, but if he does become a free agent, they should. Muhammad has proven his worth as both a possession receiver and a deep threat, and he would improve their passing game just by walking in the door.

Remember Gerald Warren, the Cleveland Browns defensive tackle who announced that he planned to lay one across Ben Roethlisberger’s head? Yeah, Romeo Crennel doesn’t want him around. The Browns have encouraged Warren to seek trade opportunities.
Which begs the question: who would trade for a loudmouth, head-hunting moron?
Okay, besides them…

At least, that’s what sources with the Fort-Worth Star Telegram are saying. Drew Bledsoe is expected to be introduced as a Dallas Cowboy tomorrow.
That whole Drew Brees thing I floated past people last week? Yeah, you can toss that in the shredder now…

The Carolina Panthers resigned special teams specialist Rod Smart to a 4-year extension today. Smart was one of 27 Carolina running backs who suffered season-ending injuries last year, but he is expected to be ready for training camp this year.

Today was the salary-cap era NFL’s annual game of tag.
Edgerrin James? Tagged. Shaun Alexander? Tagged. Rudi Johnson? Tagged. Adam Vinatieri? Tagged. John Abraham? Tagged. Donovan Darius? Tagged. Charles Woodson? Tagged.
Plaxico Burress? Not tagged.
Of course, this means Plax will file for free agency and very likely sign with another team. This is not good for the Steelers’ offense, which was much better with Burress in the lineup last season. One wonders how much better the Steelers might have been in January had Burress not gotten hurt in Cincinnati.
Granted, Hines Ward and Antwaan Randle El certainly don’t suck, but neither is as big a deep threat as Plax. Ken Whisenhunt will have to reshape this offense for next season.

From AP wire reports:
Former punter Reggie Roby, a 16-year NFL veteran and three-time Pro Bowl selection, died Tuesday after being found unconscious at home by his wife. He was 43.
Melissa Roby found her husband with no pulse. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at home and in the ambulance, but he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at St. Thomas Hospital, according to a statement released by the family.
The cause of death is unknown, the statement said.
Roby was a sixth-round pick in 1983 out of Iowa by the Miami Dolphins, where he played from 1983-92. He also played for the Washington Redskins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Houston/Tennessee Oilers and San Francisco 49ers, where he wrapped up his career with a final season in 1999.
