In case you missed it yesterday — and for the most part, I did, since I was focused on the Steelers-Pats game — Carolina’s downward spiral continued apace yesterday in Seattle, as Seahawk RB Sean Alexander rushed for 195 yards and a TD against a Carolina defense that no longer seems capable of stopping the run. Carolina running backs, meanwhile, managed to gain only 76 yards on the day.

I followed this one mostly on NFL.com, and every time I checked the Gamecenter screen, it showed that Seattle was having no trouble marching down the field. The Seahawks only punted once. Carolina? Six times.

The only real bright side for the Panthers were their receivers. Muhsin Muhammad and Keary Colbert both had 100-yard days, and Muhammad caught two TD passes, even though one was a garbage TD at the end of the game that only mattered to gamblers.

It’s gotten so bad for the Panthers that their some of their local coverage has resorted to covering the fantasy angle rather than the games themselves. Some writers are also just fooling themselves, since the argument that the NFC South is the worst division in the league isn’t exactly invalid.

Regardless, this Panthers team is a MASH unit in freefall, and unless they can get on a Patriot-like streak, it will be 2005 at the earliest before this team can become a contender again.
